Music Workshops
JMS music workshops are curated vocal, bootcamp experiences customized for organized vocal groups. This service begins with an assessment to prioritize your group’s greatest needs and includes but is not limited to Individual voice control, harmonizing dynamics and blending, and conducting proper sound checks. This experience can be taught at our campus or brought to your group’s location.
Meet Shirley Smith
Shirley Smith is the founder of Journey Music Studios, LLC, (JMS), one of Metro Detroit’s premier places for music lessons.
A Detroit native who studied voice, piano, and harp under the tutelage of Patricia Terry-Ross at Cass Technical High School. She also studied voice with Professor Dennis J. Tini at Wayne State University.

"Ms. Shirley Smith is a phenomenal musician/teacher that knows how to pour her knowledge and skills into others in a fun and easy way. Taking piano lessons with her for over two years, she taught me important things like scales and chords, music theory, ear training, and she helped me work on sight-reading as well. One thing that I enjoyed doing with her was trying to figure out the bass line and chords when listening to a song by using the number system. I've also had the privilege of having her as vocal coach when she was the music minister at our church. President
As president of Journey Music Studios, Pam English partners with Shirley Smith to help facilitate the vision and furtherance of the company. She is renowned in the field of gospel music. She has worked with, written or produced music for some of the premier musical artists of our time, including: Diana Ross, Marvin Winans, Fred Hammond, J Moss, Kierra Sheard-Kelly, and many more.

How much do lessons cost?
Lessons range from $31 to $40 for a 30-minute lesson, and $50 to $60 for a 60-minute lesson depending on if you have signed up for the single lesson package or the monthly lesson package. In addition, there is a $35 non-refundable registration fee for new students to activate your account.

Can I purchase lessons as a gift for someone?
Lessons can be purchased as a gift. Purchased lessons are non-refundable.

Do you offer virtual or in-person lessons?
JMS offers virtual and on-campus lessons. This option can be selected during enrollment.

Does JMS give recitals for their students?
Yes. JMS hosts an annual showcase during the month of May. Information will be provided in a timely manner in preparation for our signature event.

What is the youngest age you take for music lessons?
We start music classes for students as young as 5 years old. All students receive an initial assessment to determine the student’s ability and skillset.
